Phyllis Garrett - Cello

How long have you played?

I’ve played my cello since I was 10 years old. I have played in OFO since its beginning in 1980!

Occupation (or what keeps you busy when you’re not making music):

Retired elementary school teacher….last 21 years in kindergarten.

How did you get started playing your instrument?

In fourth grade, the high school orchestra conductor came to talk about instruments we could start playing in the 5th grade through high school. He recommended the cello for me because I had big hands. I had no idea what a cello was!

Musical groups I’ve played with:

  • High school orchestra

  • Maryville College (TN) orchestra

  • Columbia, MO symphony

  • Jefferson City, MO orchestra

  • Joplin Symphony

  • and now OFO!

Favorite piece I’ve ever performed:

Favorite composer or musical style:

I love mostly classical music

Favorite hobby besides music:

Making stained glass, sewing, quilting, bike riding (until recently), pickle ball (until recent injury), baking, travel, having coffee with friends!

Favorite movie or TV show:

Sound of Music

Greece

I won the Jefferson City, MO Women’s tennis championship in 1974!

If I could have dinner with any musician (past or present), it would be:

YoYoMa

What do you enjoy most about playing in the Ozark Festival Orchestra?

The camaraderie of the players, the commitment of the players, the dedication and enthusiasm of our conductor.

Favorite orchestra memory:

TOO many to even mention all:

  • Having 3 grandchildren featured at young artist’s concerts

  • Having husband Mike sing with us (many times)

  • Conductor Dr. Tang coming on stage as Kermit the Frog to conduct The Rainbow Connection

  • Having Monte Belknap playing his violin with us and having his mom, who started the orchestra, back for a visit

  • Taking our orchestra on Monday nights to other surrounding communities

  • Moving to the PAC from the city hall auditorium was the BEST!!!
